well yesterday was driving and noticed at stop lights the temp was going up fast. when moving it would cool down. well the previous owner had put an elec fan on the car that is operated by a toggle switch. well the power going to the fan has and inline fuse. upon popping eh hood not only ws the fuse popped but it had burned it, the plug in, adn melted the wires like it caught fire. so no power to the fan.

my question is how do I fix this? cut out that section and replace? or something else? keep in mind elec is NOT my strong suite and this is my 1st 5.0 so try to keep it barney style for your solution please, lol.

You can always splice in a newfuse assembly. If it burned like that unfortunately the Fan is no good. It is creating too much resistance in circuit and burning back to the first thing that can pop.

What size wire did u have run to it. If it was to small of a wire it wasnt get n enough juice to keep up, try a gigger gauge wire with another inline fuse.

rick had the same thing happen on their fox at the liberty car show last year or the year before... something about a relay and wiring combo... i think the main issue was that the wire wasnt the right size... but its possible that the fan failed and for some reason started pulling like double the current...

think of the wire as a pipe... if it flows enough for one toilet normally and someone else flushes a second one then the pressure could burst the line... well instead of bursing the line it burned up

First off it needs to have a relay in place and not just a inline fuse.next make sure you are using the proper size wire.i always use 10ga for wiring a fan and i also use 50-60 anp winch relay that u can but at any napa for about 40 bux.

ok so I guess I got a temp fix for it. got a new inline fuse assembly and wired that in. it was a 12 guage wire. but the fan is off a 94-95 mustang and the shroud is broken on it so it was on my list of things to replace. if you cant tell elec is not my specialty. only reason I know it was 12 guage was because thats the size it fit into for the stripper. sound right? but plans are for alum rad and new elec fan. but who knows when that will be. hopefully soon, after I fix the brakes, lol.

Depends on the fan. Relays are based on Amperage. I would say that to be safe get a 40 AMP Relay. What fan is in the car? Is it 2 or 3 wires?

Here is a simple diagram for your help.

This is for a 2 wire Fan set up.

definitely get a relay and just go ahead and run a new 10 gauge wire also. you don't know what other damage occurred to your other wire, not to mention, i believe it's too small for that fan. those things pull hella amps on startup!

and i've seen those fans go bad also. one went bad in the BDR car one night before he was heading out to a race and i had to rewire everything really fast so he could make the race. he picked up another fan at the event and was good to go.

I have tons of relays if you need one and are close to me i can wire it up for you. Remember same size ground wire as the hot wire. Don't skimp. Also run it to a factory ground don't try to just make your own. Let me know if you need help.
