You could change the whole 7.5 rear out, and put a 8.8 in. :yes1:

You can change the center section on the 7.5 and also change the gears. But you could probably find an 8.8 for the same money or less as the center section and gears for the 7.5.

+1 ! I've seen 8.8's for fairly cheap, and it will bolt in plus allow you room to grow if you ever throw a V8 in there. As to the gears themselves, thats going to depend on what exactly you're looking for. Tell us your driving habits/tranny type/expected or allowable mpg decrease and we can give you a good recommendation...

Is the 8.8 hard to install, I've seen a few on craigslist that seem like a pretty good deal.
The plan is whenever my engine goes[hopefully not soon] I'm gonna drop a v8 so I guess the 8.8 is the best idea?
Also, I'd rather not take a large hit on my mpg right now at least..

Easy install, and will bolt right in on your car. If you're worried about the mpg hit, I'd say go for the 3.55's then...

Or just find one with 3.27's.

If thats doable then you can get one without gears for less maybe and I can set you up with 3.27's for free probably...

Depends what kinda 4 banger you have. auto cars came with 3.73's and 5 speed came with 3.55 factory, not getting much more than a posi swapping to a 8.8, and the added rotating mass will hurt the little torqueless 4 banger.

it's a 5spd...
So what does hurt mean?

He's talking about you having to overcome even more drivetrain mass with an engine that barely makes enough torque to get you going as it is. The difference should actually be pretty miniscule, but the info on factory equipped 7.5 ratios for the 2.3 tells us that you likely have not much at all to gain with a swap until after you go to a V8. Putting in a 3.27 or 3.08 would make it harder for you to get going than it is now although your highway mpg would be a couple points better, the intown would suffer since you'd almost always have to floor it...
