ok my care went from fine to passenger side making a horrible grinding noise when I press on the brakes. so guess that my sign that I need to do the brakes. never done them before so if you could help me out by showing me a write up, telling me what tools I need, and what parts I need to pick up, I would greatly appriciate it. thank you.

Front, rears, or both?

fronts you're gonna need something like a c clamp to compress the piston before you put the new pads in.

rears if they are drum, then always keep one side together as a reference! LOL. and those cheap spring tools at autozone make taking them apart/putting back together a little bit easier.

Jack the car up and take off the tire (dur), then there are two bolts holdin the calp. on. take them off, you on hafta do one of them and just swing it back, but its not hard takin just one more bolt off. then just take your old pads, get a pair of chanel locks and squeze the pistons into the calp. when you got it pressed in. just install new pads put the calp back on and put the bolts back in. its pretty straight foward. youll see when you get in there. i was really nervous about doin mine a couple months back, and i got in there and it was pretty easy. cept i replaced the roters to so that required a lil more work. but even that was pretty easy. if you have any ware marks in the roter, i would suggest takin them off and go have them mited and turn. (i think your supose to do that any way, but you dont hafta to, its kinda like when you replace a clutch, you wanna re-surface the fly-wheel) to take the roter off, take a flat head, pop off the cap in the center, remove the pin, remove the "big nut" and then if i rember rite there is a nother nut behind that one. then just do it in reverse to put it back on. its always better to not get in a rush, and leave one side for referance just in case. hope this helps

as far as the rear goes, imma let some one else take that one, its been a couple years sence ive done one.
What kind of pads are you goin with?

If you havent decided on a pad, i would recomend Hawk Performance pads, thats what i put on mine and i LOVE them. Part number- HB263F.650
there not to pricey i think i paid around 70-80 bucks for them

Only other tidbit I'd add to that would be to use dialectric grease on the calipers where the pads slide in and out. This will prevent corrosion and allow free movement of the pads and prevent uneven wear. Also I'd repack or replace the inner and outer wheelbearings while you're in there. Looks like all the other major points were covered with the exception being replacing the brake fluid if you haven't done it in awhile. Most folks skip that step and you'd be surprised how nasty it can get as a result.

The rears are quite a bit easier for some, and more dificult for others. For me they're merely different. I have a Ford special service brake tool kit though. Do the same as the fronts as far as doing one side at a time.

Remove wheel

remove drum

pull springs holding the brake shoes in place

inspect/replace the wheel cylinders

resurface or replace the rear drums

clean heavily with brake/parts cleaner spray

install the new brake shoes

reinstall the springs to hold the shoes in place

use adjuster mechanism to properly adjust the brakes so they aren't dragging on you while driving.

reinstall drum/install new drums

install wheel

check fluid level/bleed brakes if you needed to break the lines to replace a wheel cylinder or something.

road test/adjust as needed.

EDIT - Dang, my bad. :hidingbehind: Not until after I posted my reply did I realize that this post was a month old! LOL! oooops!

Most if not all of the main points have been covered. The only thing I'd add at this point is to be prepared to buy new rotors for the front. If you're hearing bad grinding noises up front, then the rivets from the front pad(s) is (are) digging into the rotor - too deep penetration and it won't be able to be turned out. You might be okay, but at least have that possibility in your head when budgeting the job.

This is simple

step 1-get in your car
step 2-drive west
step 3-stop and get some beer
step 4-arrive at my house
step 5-Learn how to do you brakes (with supervision)
step 6-drive home with a smile on your face knowing you fixed your own car:thumbsup1:

brakes are cake - you shouldn't have a problem with them. just take the drum brakes off the rear. less rolling weight sons!:lol1:
