Everything was fine when i got up this morning. Just another day in paradise, right? Wrong. I drove my truck to work like i normally do. At lunch i decide to leave and take the trash to the dump. It was so nice out i decided to roll my windows down. I noticed the sound immediately. It is a nasty grinding sound that breaks make when you have no pads left. I slowed down and the noise did as well. I limped to the dump, and noticed that all 4 rotors were scorching hot. I then proceeded to limp it home and it seemed that everyone i rode by had to stop and stare. How embarrassing. I'm hoping there is just some debris in a line somewhere and i can bleed it out with some fresh fluid. Any other ideas as to what it might be? 2005 F150 4x4
Any help is appreciated. If nothing else, some words of encouragement.:lol1:

You can do it!
Brake rotors will be hot enough to burn your finger even when operating correctly after driving a bit. Just start by jacking it up and pulling the wheels off and checking the pads. Should be pretty obvious which ones are worn bad.

Thanks for the support guys. I love cold weather but hate the short days. I need the evenings to work on the car. I will get it though. It just sucks to have to work on the DD when i want to be wrenching on the car.

I have a 2005 and they said the rotor have to be turned on the truck. How is that possible, and why would ford do that?

The 2004-2008 F150's front brake rotor and wheel hub are made into one piece, just like the foxbody front rotor assy, easier to resurface with an on car brake lathe instead of dismount, repack wheel bearings and remount.
Largedrag, if your 2005 F150 is a 5.4 3V there was a recall on some of the 2005/2006 F150's for a brake booster vacuum hose(08S05) that would pop loose either causing brake pedal going to the floor or extremely hard to push. I would have a Ford dealer check your VIN number to see if your truck is affected by it.........who knows that could be causing your problem.
PM me your VIN and I can run it for you if you like.
Good luck brother!

It's a 4.6. I am going to attempt to get it in the garage this afternoon and see whats up with it. It seems as if more than 1 brake is grabbing. i will keep you all updated in case some of you run into the same trouble in the future.

The rotor and bearings are not serviced seperatly. I order a pair yesterday and if memory serves correctly they were ~$250 a side. We have put 2-3 calipers on 04-08 models over time but they were all fleet vehicles from the same company. One 04 has 498K miles on the factory everything. Head gaskets done at 395K, trans flush every 50K. Never been into otherwise. Factory brake pads lasted 125K.

Well, after taking a look at 8 good brake pads and 4 good rotors I was stumped. I cleaned and greased the slots that the pads slide in. Took it for a test drive and still grinding. For some odd reason I decided to slip it in to 4 wheel drive. What's that? Noise is gone. Put it back in to 2 wheel drive and no grinding again. I fixed it. Well not really but at least the grinding is gone. At least I know the brakes have been serviced and the fluid changed and flushed. I can't explain what was causing the grinding sound but it has something to do with the 4 wheel drive system. It's weird though because I haven't used it in a while.

Thats not good. Is it manual or auto 4x4? Sounds like the 4x4 shift collar is touching something and causing the grinding.
