I am assuming that if I shift into 2nd and reverse every so often and it grinds that I have some bad sychro's? Would that be correct?

Reverse is non syncronized. You will need to come to a stop, put it in 4th then reverse to keep it from grinding. The 2nd gears issue is most likely a blocking ring.

Foward Gears are Synchronized. Reverse is not. If you need to go to a foward gear before shifting to Reverse, your clutch is not adjusted propelry.

As for your issue, it sounds like you are having an engagement/disengagement issue. It is only hitting those gears because once you grind or miss a gear once, it can/will start to mushroom the teeth and it will never get better without repair.

If you are interested, I do T5 rebuilds.
