I know this will show my ignorance but, I need to clean my engine. It's filthy. Never done it before. What do you suggest I use?

Cover your ignition coil and distributor with a grocery bag, spray degreaser all over the place in the engine compartment. Then let the degreaser eat up the dirt. After a minute or so, rinse everything well with the hose.

Depends on how clean you want it. You could pull the engine, fill all the holes paint the engine bay body color, detail the engine and put it back in, but thats the other side of the spectrum.

I have used something-Brite Oven Cleaner before but it was when the motor was out of the car. Also, if you have one near by or a friend follow you (just encase) you can get a couple cans of the engine cleaner, drive to the DIY power car wash, cover the vitals, spray it down, wait and power wash it off.

I use wd-40. I buy it in the gallon can and use a spray bottle. I spray everything down real good with it after I cover the distributor. let it set for a bit and then I use a pressure washer to wash it all off. wd-40 is a degreaser and won't leave a white residue or harm any wires. if you any colored hoses such as a radiator hose that has oil or grease on it, wd-40 will make iot look like new. after mine is dry, I do another spray down with it and use a clean rag to wipe off the excess. it'll make everything shine and look like new for a long time.
