ok guys there seemed to be alot of interest in my build from my introduction thread so heres the story and progress up to date:
i recently turned 18 so for my bday my parents and grandparents purchased me a project car: (sorry for cell phone pics)
we picked up this wrecked 89 lx. it is an automatic with a 5.0 motor and has 125,xxx miles on it, it runs flawlessly, the owner just let it get away from him and dropped it into a ditch
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l219/yungwunof757/tracypics017-1.jpg
along with that car we got this parts car for it...also an 89 lx. We got both of em for a steal...1100 bucks :)
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l219/yungwunof757/tracypics016-1.jpg
we got the cars home and started tearing down to see what all we had to do.
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l219/yungwunof757/tracypics015-1.jpg
we need to get it back to being level
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l219/yungwunof757/tracypics010-1.jpg
fenders off
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l219/yungwunof757/tracypics014-1.jpg
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l219/yungwunof757/tracypics013-1.jpg
in these pics you can see what i call "krinks"
drivers side:
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l219/yungwunof757/tracypics012-1.jpg
pass. side:
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l219/yungwunof757/tracypics011-1.jpg
we began removing everything that was connected to the inner fenderwells (air box, battery, wires, etc.) as well as the radiator, fan, etc.. this was so we could begin drilling out the spot welds.
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l219/yungwunof757/tracypics008-1.jpg

more progress!
my step dad finished getting the spot welds drilled out and got the whole front off:
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l219/yungwunof757/tracypics001-1.jpg
while he was checking some things he noticed the pass. side head gasket was leaking so he took the valve cover off and found this:
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l219/yungwunof757/tracypics022.jpg
(kinda hard to see but look at all the pin holes)
While he was tinkering with the motor i began to strip the parts car of the parts we needed:
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l219/yungwunof757/tracypics003-2.jpg (this car has a ton of spare parts just sitting in the inside of it so just let me kno if you need anything and ill see if its in there)
not alot of progress but things will pick up now that ive graduated and have money to spend :)
oh yea! we also got the front rotors back today after they were sent out to be remachined!
itll be slow and steady but i dont want to rush anything and i want it done right. This is something ive wanted to do since i was 5 watching my dad build his truck so im going to cherish every moment of it haha
thanks guys more to come!
Curious as to why you did'nt just transplant the motor out of the wrecked car into the better body/chassis?

X2 Thanks greg I was wondering the same thing, because now since you found that the motor wasn't pristine you should just pull it anyway.:yes1:

same question came up in my thread on corral.net
the parts car we have is absolute **** pretty much. the only good parts on the car happen to be the front fascia and fenders that we need everythig else is in pretty bad shape with dents and holes etc..
and as far as the blue car the only bad spots were the front that we are fixing and the rest is a solid car so thats why we went this route
clear things up?

Looks like a good project you got. Keep us updated
The bad spots must be on the driverside?? Not knocking your hardwork, just curious. Because the parts car looks to be a better car(from the pics). Anyways I have done a complete rebuild like that, and it's a serious amount of work!

yea its on the drivers side ill take some pics for proof! haha

I like the SEM trim black. For some people its hard to find, but most auto parts stores that sell body shop supplies can get it if the dont have it. As a second choice I like the duplicolor bumper black.

well guys i finally have time to update this thread!
well weve made alot of progress in the past few weeks so here it goes:
well we finally got the core support of the parts car we needed to swap onto the good car
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l219/yungwunof757/0729091856-1.jpg
so this meant the car was ready to head to the shop to have it welded on and the frame straightened out
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l219/yungwunof757/0729091910.jpg
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l219/yungwunof757/0729091912.jpg
we got it back!!! guys did an amazing job on it
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l219/yungwunof757/0804090948
.jpg
time to pull the motor to clean/ paint the engine bay
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l219/yungwunof757/0807091941.jpg
got the motor out
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l219/yungwunof757/0808091009.jpg
and was left with this
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l219/yungwunof757/0808091128.jpg
after a good soaking in purple power and a run over with a pressure washer the bay was cleaaaaaaan!
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l219/yungwunof757/0808091721.jpg
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l219/yungwunof757/0808091722.jpg
after the prep was done i shot it with a coat of primer
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l219/yungwunof757/0809091844.jpg
then sprayed a coat of flat black
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l219/yungwunof757/0809092014.jpg
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l219/yungwunof757/0810091825.jpg
and i set up my own little paint both haha for little odd and end parts
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l219/yungwunof757/0809091905.jpg
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l219/yungwunof757/0810091824.jpg
overall i am extremely happy with the turn out. it was a rattle can paint job with the high degree paint. its by no means a professional job but looks alot better than what it did.
NEXT!!!!!!
we begin tearing down the motor to put on a few goodies and clean it up and paint the block
stay tuned!! :)

so heres the pics that were promised
enjoyyyy
well i finally got the motor in (not running yet, im currently waiting on my new Dissy to arrive)
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l219/yungwunof757/0920091826.jpg
so while in waiting for the new dissy to continue with the motor i began on the interior and exterior work a little bit
First came the new (to me) rear quarter windows.
Before:
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l219/yungwunof757/0903091425.jpg
After:
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l219/yungwunof757/0903091543.jpg
then me and my buddy shawn moved to the interior to put in new carpet and a newly recovered headliner
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l219/yungwunof757/1016091609.jpg
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l219/yungwunof757/1016091807.jpg
shawn vaccuming his side (as he calls it) haha
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l219/yungwunof757/1016091948.jpg
and shawn again putting the carpet in the back of the rear seat. i will be forever greatful to him for this because i could not figure out how in the hell to do it lol thanks bud:thumbsup1:
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l219/yungwunof757/1016092140.jpg
after the carpet was done we put in the headliner and got all the trim back in. i must say i like it alot better than what was up there before
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l219/yungwunof757/1016091348.jpg

we got the seats back in:
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l219/yungwunof757/1016092254.jpg
and after working on it pretty much all day just sat down to enjoy our handy work haha
me:
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l219/yungwunof757/1016092256.jpg
shawn:
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l219/yungwunof757/1016092255.jpg
i dont think we did to bad:
Before:
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l219/yungwunof757/1015091437.jpg
After: (still need to do some cleaning but yall get the idea)
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l219/yungwunof757/1017091705.jpg
with the interior done i began sanding and preping for primerrrrrrrrr
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l219/yungwunof757/1015090000.jpg
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l219/yungwunof757/1014092345.jpg
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l219/yungwunof757/1015090000a.jpg
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l219/yungwunof757/1015090007.jpg
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l219/yungwunof757/0813091118.jpg
the next day i began spraying:
i rolled it outside after i got the back half done
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l219/yungwunof757/1017091643.jpg
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l219/yungwunof757/1017091702.jpg
then back inside it went to get the rest:
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l219/yungwunof757/1017091800.jpg
in the process of painting i also refinished my trim (it was painted that ugly blue color:
first i painted the door area around the window black:
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l219/yungwunof757/1018091402.jpg
then i sanded, cleaned, primed and painted my trim but i forgot to take pictures of those steps haha oopsssss
next i installed the passenger side trim and mirror:
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l219/yungwunof757/1018091605.jpg
looks alot better than before imo
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l219/yungwunof757/1012092057a.jpg
and after doing all this in a nearly dark garage haha i invested in some new lights for the garage...lowes was having a sale...so no more trying to work with just a flashlight for me:thumbsup1:
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l219/yungwunof757/1017091930.jpg

NICE good job :yes1: :yes1: :yes1: :yes1: :yes1:
car is looking really nice so far!
the X-cam is huge. ide call afr and talk to them about that they recommend. the FMS cams are as old as you are, so ide possibly look at a little more modern grind with some more technology.
why pay the big money for a 9"? a built 8.8 should do just as well for a long time.

i was going to try and use stuff me and my dad have laying around
but i guess i never thought about how old the E cam was haha
ill give afr a call for sure
i could possibly end up going with a custom cam in all seriousness
and im going with the 9 because i have one around here
