Been having a start issue and was trying to pull codes but the reader doesnt light up. I had a buddy come over with his and nothing either. Could it be a bad computer or am I missing something?

Not the same car but I have a 98 Dodge Ram 1500 and it wasn't starting and the computer showed no codes. Turned out that the computer was dead.

Is the CEL on??
nope. But I can unhook the IAC or BAP and nothing will still make it turn on.

Actron scanner and another brand but cant remember the name. As for the no start issue thats just it caus it doesnt do anything. I have spark and fuel, timings at factory 10 degrees, TFI and pip check out good. I cant even get a stumble out of it but it acts like it wants to start seems like it needs just the slightest thing and it should fire right, just not sure what that one thing missing is.

Have you just checked for fuel pressure or have you used a noid light to make sure the injectors are firing?

Yes FP at 38ish and did a few injectors with the noid and it seems to be getting the signal.

It seemn fine to me, and I just put in a new set of 25 plugs. I also have a msd box and have tried it hooked up and unhokked with no difference.

What happened when this problem started?? Any changes?? Have you checked compression??

I pulled my intake to powder coat it and its been sitting about a yr or so since it last ran. Mechanically I havent changed anything. Havent done a compression check yet cause Im almost positive its electrical of some sort and its probally something stupid that I over looked .

Did you wash the excess powder from intake? If not, the powder can damage the engine when ran. I would do a compression check next.

It was blown out before installation and all gasket surfaces were taped off before hand. I dont see how an engine can lose compression all of a sudden from sitting? Its a brand new motor that just was broke in last yr got maybe 80 miles on it.

You need to wash them out, the powder can damage the rings and cylinder walls.
If you have spark, air and fuel its not the computer... Check compression and tell us the results.

Theres noting to wash out cause everything is pre taped before coating.
Ill check the compression this weekend and report back. thanks:thumbsup1:

Better safe than sorry... Even tape can lift, etc.

Well I don't want to add to the bad news, but you've likely hurt the engine with the powder coated intake as one poster mentioned. In my area here, we have at least 3 engines down because of powder coated intakes. Checking the compression should give you a clue for sure. Something about those intakes & powder coating that the engine just doesn't like. Sounds like polishing or painting an intake is the better idea. Hope you have better luck and don't have to tear down the engine like these guys have had to do, but don't be surprised if you do., :-/

Not sure if I understand how powder coating an intake can affect a motor. If this was the case than millions of people would have a problem?

The issue is with not cleaning them out afterwards. You need to wash them out. Blowing them out with air doesn't work. I have seen the same issues with Escort engine with a 1.9/2.0 that drop the valve seats. People replace the head and try to run it and end up damaging the new head b/c of debris left over in the intake. Taping the intake ports is a good gesture to help keep it clean, but they need to be washed out.

i cleaned mine with simple green and compressed air.

Well, my point is, cars run air filters for a reason. Powder coat is nothing but sand in its simplest form. Throwing a handful of sand in the intake will result in low compression numbers.

Well the car runs now found a bad EEC relay but still cant pull any codes, not even the 11 for everything is fine. I got a new reader and tried it on a buddys car with no problems but nothing on mine.
