Always had good luck with plain old purple stuff, full strength from a spray bottle...just avoid spraying it onto decals on the core support...and then let it set for a few minutes, scrub with a brush where necessary, then hose off. I finish it out with some of that clear 100% silicone tire stuff while the engine is still wet, coat it down GOOD...then after about 15 minutes, wipe off the excess. Looks like it came out of a detail shop. The purple will take off oil, etc from around valve covers, out of th intake valley, etc. May have to repeat the spray, set, rinse a couple of times if really nasty. Only problem I have ever had, was forgetting to dry out the dist cap when all done. I do this engine off.

Cover the distributor cap up with a plastic bag. Rinse the motor off and then spray it down with 50/50 simple green and water. Use a brush to scrub the greasy dirty areas. Then I use a leaf blower to dry the motor off. After that I spray some tire shine on the engine. After that I crank it up and let it run for a few minutes. Hope this helps.

PURPLE POWER WILL REMOVE ENGINE BAY PAINT AT FULL STRENGTH..BE CAREFUL
i usually use LA's Totally Awesome found in Dollar general. im not sure why this product isnt more popular but when you spray it you can see the dirt litterally run off. i use it in the engine bay, wheels, tires inner fenders etc..its dirt cheap as well..
i also use simple green..it works well, non toxic and smells good...
i use a 2 gallon garden sprayer bottle to rinse the motor and engine bay....its precise yet thorough enough to rinse but not get sensitive components wet.

In 25+ years of using it, I have NEVER had this happen. Took the ink off a decal on a Toyota PU once, but that's it.

thanks,i thought about purple power but wasn't sure how bad it would tarnish things up.so you leave you engine off huh? I guess cold it wouldn't tarnish as bad as being hot? and the tire dressing is interesting LOL! i never thought of that.

IMO...cold / warm engine is best...not hot...and dont spray it on a dry engine. Like putt said...wet it first. And for the record, I use whatever name brand is on sale.:thumbsup1:

B52 Degreaser. Best stuff PERIOD. Especially if its a really nasty oily, greasy engine.

Purple Power/ Greased Lightning WILL take almost all engine bay paint off if you scrub it at all. That paint is very fragile. That's how I stripped the paint off of my engine bays was by soaking it in degreaser and scrubbing it a little. Be careful! But it really does take all the grease and grime off of anything you want it to.

I have always used Gunk's Engine degreaser and the local car wash high pressure hose on RINSE mode. Never pulled any paint off, and it worked really well.
