Just got her home. I am pretty well pleased with her. Turns out the transmission trouble I was told about was it just doesn't have fifth gear, but with the 2.73's who needs that? It needs a few spots in the paint touched up, the dust blew off of it where it sat in a body shop for two years,a back glass and some brake work. But it runs out smooth, its pretty much all original except for some flowmasters. 89k miles. Drives down the road straight as an arrow. The AC even seems to blow pretty cold. Its gonna need a little work but I finally have my four eyed 86 GT I've been wanting forever!

Those snap rings that hold the fifth gear on the cluster shaft brake all the time. Remove the tailshaft housing and see if the fifth gear is laying in the bottom, might be a quick fix...

That is what I am hoping. The tranny only has about four hundread miles on it so it can't be anything too major.
Oh forgot to mention I got a ford ranger load of parts with it too. Inlcluding and extra set of back seats.

i was about to make that comment.
in 85.5 some of the auto's for fuel injection. so its doubtful and 86 5spd car would have a carb, unless its an extremely early 86, then it might be possible. check the title and vin?

I'd say it's an 85.........both reference books I have indicate all 86 5.0's had SEFI.....not a carb

I would say it's an 85 becauseof carb and no third brake light, great starting point it looks better than the one I started with.

If I had to choose between a 85 and 86.............85 is the better one to have.......don't have to worry about those pistons that ran for the 86's flat top I think......plus the carb's were faster too.

Yeah I am much happier with the carb. I've thought with enough driveablility problems with the fuel injected stuff I've had.

Another way to tell that it is an 85 is that the battery is on the passenger side on an 85 vs in 86 and up they moved it and the solenoid to the drivers side.
Also, in 85 the 5 spd cars were carbureted and the autos had the SEFI. In 86 they went to the standardized FI set up on all Fox Bodies regardless of transmission type.

Drove her around for about thirty minutes today and cleaned it up a little. I am really impressed with it. Man its a turd though when you are used to the 4:56 gears I have in my 91 the 2:73's(I assume) just don't cut it. But I still like her. Hell even the cruise control works. Tried to over heat though once on me when I was sitting at a stop sign after I got gas. But hey I hadn't even checked the coolant in it so who knows. I think I have the convert sold so she is gonna get new seats covers, carpet, and the body work redone that needs to be fixed.
