View Full Version : Holcomb Fall Civil Wars/Club Wars - 9/24/11

Ok guys and gals, it's time for a second installment of "Club Wars at The Rock" held during Holcomb Motorsports Civil Wars event on Sept. 24th(Saturday). The spring event was initiated by Wide Open Throttle Mustangs where SEFB and Sandhills Mustang Club were invited to participate. Unfortunately SMC couldn't put enough racers together in time leaving a two club battle where SEFB brought home the gold! This next event shoud be bigger and better with hopefully the same results!!

Chris and Dan from WOTM and I met with Blake Holcomb down at MW. Blake wants the Club Challenge/Shootout/Wars(not sure what name is settled on?) to be a larger part of the Civil Wars event. Sponsors are being brought on board to provide contingencies/prizes to the participants and winners. The clubs themselves will also ante up for a cash purse to the victor's! Instead of the WWF style belt idea from last time(that never came to fruition), Holcomb will provide glass eched trophies for the clubs.
Full details are not final, but the racing format should be about the same.
- Each club submits 3 power adder and 3 naturally aspirated cars with 2 alternates(one p/a & one n/a) for a total of 8 cars.
- All club cars will run in a True Street style format(20min cruise, then 3 back-to-back runs).
- Each car's fastest run is added together for a combined club ET...quickest combined ET wins!!!
- The alternates will also run in case any of their respective club racers have mechanical failure, then the alternate's best time fills in.
One major addition to this coming event is a Dyno Challenge where each club will submit their most powerful p/a and n/a racers to lay down 1 or 2 quick pulls. Peak hp & tq from each cars best pull will be added together for a combined club score. Highest combined score will win. Blake said he will work on getting a dyno to the track, but I haven't heard confirmation yet.
There's also discussion around including/requiring female racers as well(can't let the guys have all the fun!!)
Blake is going to try and get us parking on the opposite side of where we were last time for greater club exposure and so we don't feel like "baby in the corner". :lol1: This will likely require a couple trailers to go down Fri night to reserve the area we want, so let's prepare for that.
Blake is allowing the clubs to vend club merchandise at the track as well so get your t-shirt and sticker orders lined up.
So what do you say...are you and your ride up for it???
Please post up if your interested in participating, but DO NOT POST INFO ABOUT YOUR CAR. Send me a PM with that info to keep our cards close to the vest(year/make/model, passed ETs, dyno figures, etc.)
Keep in mind we are a Fox Body focused club so we're going to weight our racers in that direction. However, many other factors will come into play on selection as well, just like last time(two members with New Edges represented us very well!). At the end of the day we want our fastest, most consistent and most experienced racers which gives us the best chance of coming out on top. Nothing personal at all and no favoritism, simply the best! :thumbsup1:
For those not selected but still want to run, Holcomb has many index classes to run. Heck you can even run in the True Street event with us, just not as a club racer in the shootout.
More details to follow as we get them, so stay tuned!!

Some rules as posted by WOTM:
Club vs Club drag challenge rules:
1. All cars must be registered, tagged and have insurance.
2. One power adder system per car only. Explanation: A Supercharger is considered a power adder system as well as a twin turbo. A nitrous car with 2 stages of nitrous is a power adder system. If you combine a super charger and nitrous that is considered two power adder systems and is prohibited.
3. Full interior required. Fabricated door panels allowed, race seats allowed, rear seat delete allowed.
4. DOT approved street tires example Nitto’s NT555R, Mickey Thompson ET streets, or Hoosiers QTP. Note: TIRES MUST BE DOT APPROVED.
5. Any car that runs faster than 10.00 in the ¼ mile will require a roll cage.
6. All drivers must have a helmet.
7. No adjustments to any cars will be made between runs except for tire pressure.
How the “Club vs Club Drag Challenge” will run:
Each club will enter 6 cars, 3 power adders and 3 NA cars. All cars will enter in the "true street" category of Civil Wars. Each car will race in the event until the event is over. Blake from Holcomb will be keeping track of all our cars et's during the racing competition. He will then take each cars best et of the day and add them together with your other cars’ best et for an overall team et total. The club with the lowest et wins!!!!
Note: If a car breaks before his first pass then he will automatically receive a 14 second et as his/her pass. If a car breaks during the race after his first pass, his or her best pass will be used.
How “true street “event is ran:
“For True Street there will be a short cruise that all shootout entrants must complete. Then three back to back 1/4 mile runs. Best average wins.
There will be awards for 10-11-12-13 second categories.
For the shootout portion we will take the best two out of three for each pair but they will also be competiting for the true street trophies as well.”
Must have full interior. rear seat delete ok, but must have 2 front seats, door pannels, dash ect. These can all be aftermarket peices, just has to be there. we dont care if insulation is pulled from under carpet or trunk pannels are missing. Just no stripped down cars. We had issues with Hoosier tires last time. Some of their tires (not slicks) are not DOT approved and arent supposed to be allowed, but we didn't know that untill Holcomb told us. So we may allow them for our club comp, but vehicles running these tires will not be elligable for True Street winnings.

To clarify...the Shootout is run inside of the True Street event, so while we're competing as a club against the other clubs we're also racing as individuals in True Street. Just like Darin(boostedcoupe) rep'd us in the shootout, but also won overall in True Street...others won the 10, 11, 12 second catagories...all True Street winners received Holcomb gift certificates! :)
Note: If a car breaks before his first pass then he will automatically receive a 14 second et as his/her pass. If a car breaks during the race after his first pass, his or her best pass will be used.

ok Chris responder to me with no alternates required. I sent him a message asking if that ment not required or not using them at all. I'm waiting on a reply but I think you can have them like last year, just don't have to have them if you don't have enough people. He also said we'll need a list like last time 2 weeks out

Any new news on this event?
Yes, with just about 2 weeks to submission deadline we're struggling again to put together racers. So far just two n/a cars have stepped up to the plate when we need 3 n/a cars and 3 p/a cars. We have a few cars that said they will run if their cars are ready, in town, etc.
I had hoped with the success of the spring event and the fall event slated to be even bigger/better I thought we'd have no problem filling spots.
PLEASE POST UP HERE OR PM ME OR ANY OF THE ADMIN/MOD STAFF WITH INTEREST.
Thanks everyone!

I'm working out my brake line problem. And with the help of my dad hopefully ill have mine put together next weekend. All that needs to be done is set motor in and trans. I don't even need to retime or anything. But I'm planning on letting a local buddy do a check on it and make sure he can't adjust it to be better. Lawrence me know if you want me to run troy.

Racer Update:
There's been two catagories of volunteers, racers and back-ups.
Racer: "Heck yeah man, put me down I wanna race and hope to rep the club well...can't wait" or "I'm in...in fact the car's already on the trailer...see you there!!!!"
Back-up: "Ummm, my car's pretty much stock, but if you're short I can step in" or "Well, my car is still in pieces, but she should be ready come race day...er...ummm...maybe!" :lol1:
I want to extend a big thank you to everyone who has stepped up thus far!!! :patriot:
As of today we have 3 power adder racers with a couple back-ups and 2 naturally aspirated racers with a couple back-ups.
**We still need one more N/A racer to at least complete the roster.**
We won't finalize the racer list until the submission deadline is due(~Sept 10th), so there's still time to submit your car for consideration.
A word of caution...last spring we had a couple racers head out to test-n-tune sessions a couple weeks before the event and broke their cars which left us scrambling to find replacements. If you must dial in your cars, do it now so there's time to fix 'em if they break or go a little easy to save the hardware for race day! :thumbsup1:

If any club can't get enough racers but still competes, then that's an automatic 14.0 sec pass. So if you can run a 13.9 or quicker then your doing your club a favor. We're in a slight pickle on our side now, one of our PA cars may be down with a blown head gasket... I guess it's always somthing.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I present the 6 SEFB racers confirmed for Holcomb Motorsports Fall Civil Wars "Club Wars"!!!
Power Adder:
1. itsastangthing / CJ / '88 LX Hatch
2. Silver Sleeper / Trevor / '91 LX Hatch
3. 1992vert / Troy / '92 LX Vert
Naturally Aspirated:
1. NC STANG GUY / Billy / '90 Coupe
2. Silver91Hatch / BJ / '91 Coupe
3. 91svtcoupe / Rob / '91 Coupe
More details to come, but basically we'll meet at the track throughout the morning(or afternoon it that's all your schedule permits) where the clubs will have designated parking. We'll have time to hang out, meet the other club(s), walk around the pits and check out some awesome racing! Holcomb is hosting a car show as well for those looking to bring home some show iron!
Holcomb allows us to sell our club merchandise so bring some cash for t-shirts, hats and stickers if you need to stock up! Used parts are usually sold by individuals, sprinkled throughout the compound, where bargains can be had.
Holcomb runs the True Street event late in the day(Sat) around 6pm. We'll match up the cars for the best racing possible ahead of time. Go on the True Street 20min cruise, then line up in the stagging area in our pairings. Three back to back runs, then head back to the pits. Load up and wait for the results.
Afterwards if anybody wants to grab a late dinner before the ride home we may do that. About eight of us did it in the spring(to let the t-storms pass) and had a good time.
A reminder that Fox Mustang Magazine plans to cover the event and we need club representation beyond just the racers. Shine them up and bring them out for a great photo op and a chance to see your ride in the magazine. This will also serve as our Concord, NC meet for Sept.
Really looking forward to this and once again thank you to all the racers that volunteered. See you at The Rock!!!!!!

We "SHOULD" be at the end of Vendors Row this time. Kind of straight in front of you as you come in the gate. A few WOT will be rolling in on Friday to secure the area if anyone would like to ruff it with us and maybe throw a few back. And if any SEFB guys are coming in from the Wilmington/Jacksonville NC areas and would like to cruise in with WOT on Friday or Saturday let me know and I'll let ya know where we're meeting up at.

With everyone coming from different directions and from near and far we found it best last time to just meet at the track. Gates open early, so to get your money's worth show up as early as you'd like to walk through the pits, check out the cars, merchandise and the used parts being sold. Then hang with the clubs and watch some awesome racing until it's our turn!!

Ok folks tomorrow's the day...are you ready???
Gates open at 9am, some of us plan to get there right about then. WOTM are assembling there today with plans of staying overnight.
We will be on the opposite side of where we were last time(concession side of the track). Not exactly sure if we'll be against the track fence, over in the wooded pits or back by the gas pumps?? I'll send an update when I know for sure.
Bring small grills and food and we can cook out in the pits to save some dough!! Chairs will be a good idea too!
I believe the True Steet event will be the last event of the day tomorrow. Last time it was right around 6pm, so no need to roll up super early if you don't want too, but by lunch time would be cool so we can hang out and watch some killer racing until it's our turn.
Racers should get there as early as possible, spectators...at your leisure, but we do want your support...remember this IS Club Wars!!!!!
Weather: I think a lot of us got a taste of the front that came through this morning, but it's moved out now and partly sunny here in Charlotte. Not sure if more is expected. Forecast as of now shows 30% chance tomorrow, then a lesser chance on Sunday so things should be improving.
See you there!!!!

Killer time today guys! Weather turned out awesome, considering the days leading up to and the reported rainy weather all around us. Most everyone got some sort of sunburn to prove our good fortune! :yes1:
A big thank you to WOTM Club for inviting us once again...what a great group of guys and gals! Hanging with them was awesome!
Another solid effort from SEFB on the track today. Some thoughts I took away:
BJ ran surprisingly strong for just getting his car together...like yesterday...with some last minute laptop tuning ON THE True Street cruise!!!:yes1:
Billy...still the fastest car of the group...was dissapointed in his driving today, but I wouldn't mind being bummed about a 11.08. ;)
John has a tried and true engine combo(stock bottom end, H/C/I with an S-trim) wrapped in one stunning package. The GT is beautiful John, looking forward to hanging some more when we're not running around so crazy!!
Rob proves he's a better driver than a mechanic, glad he got that sparkplug wire on the right plug in route to a solid 13.15!! Thanks for stepping up again and repping the club very well Rob! :patriot:
The vert has provided Troy with excellent reliability on the street, but not so much at the strip. Frozen line-lock last time and a thrown belt this time at the top end of the track. Maybe 20psi with a 7.5in crank pulley is too much to ask from a 6-rib??
Other thoughts...
Thank you for manning the grill again today Rick!
Ricky - I saw where that radiator hose seemed to fight you guys some on the fix...I hope you got home in good shape?
I'm bummed that a trailer tire failure didn't allow CJ to make it to the track, but kudos to WOTM for allowing John(blown03hd) to sub in!:patriot:
Jeff - really appreciate you offering your car up in a pinch, which began several weeks ago. :thumbsup1:
You would have thought it was Father's Day with all the dads present. Mine enjoyed himself and I think the others did too!! :)
A great day for parts, both selling and acquiring!
Tony - I think if you dip your entire engine in carbon fiber you'll take that guy next time for "Best Motor"! :lol1:
Results are being tabulated and we should know who came out on top soon...although this event is so much fun, winning isn't really the best part...but it's a very close second!! :lol1::yes1::thumbsup1:

Yeah it was an aggravating first part of the day but like we talked about Im glad it was just the hose. Those squeeze clamps are worthless and thats what we were fighting with but luckliy I walked around and found somebody with a shortblock for sale that had the hose and some screw clamps on it. They saw my SEFB t-shirt I had on and said they were a member also and donated the clamps to me. I dont know who he was but thanks man. :thumbsup1: If I can return the favor let me know.
I appreciate the helping hand everybody offered me today. It definelty took some of the aggravation out of it. That seemed to do the trick and I made it home without a hitch! Everybodys cars ran good and it was a blast watching you guys run out there! Sorry I didnt get to hang out with you guys more. Had a blast with my little 2 year old! She loved all the cars and hanging out with her daddy.
Rob - My brother fell in love with the coupe. If he had the money you would have sold it today!

Ok I need car numbers for you guys. Car number 90, it has you down for making 4 passes, one of them being what appears to be an abort with a 23.222 @ 57.42. It shows car 90 making 2 2nd round passes. Car 91 I only have 2 times for but its the 1st round that I'm missing for you. It shows car 90 racing car 93 and 91 in round 2. So who ever raced car 90 in round 2 I need your name so I know which ticket is the typo, then I need to know who the other raced in round 2 so I know who to write in for that spot.

I was #90. I raced #93 in the 1st and 2nd round and then the Mystichrome in round #3.

Pretty sure it was that turbo Z28 that broke on that pass and limped down the track.

Looking at it now, this may not be a club shootout racer. Looks like I have all 5 SEFB cars counted for in round 2 and 4 of WOT but our blue cars slips are still all missing so that would make 5 on 5. Just looks like Rob raced someone else in round 2 maybe? According to the time printed on the slip he was the last club shootout car down the track in round 2.

Oops, shoulda refreshed the page before posting that. I think ur right. Like I said, we still don't have our blue cars slips, but unless he cut 1 hell of a light, your getting 2 prizes Billy! R/T and NA ET. I don't wanta spoil 60' yet till I get our missing slips, but right now SEFB has quickest 60' as well...

Damage Report: Out Whipple S-197 didn't come out as clean as thought... he checked his coolant resivor 3 times on his way back to Cherry Point and it was bone dry every time. He keap adding water to it to get home then parked it. Upon futher investigation there's a milk shake on the dip stick and when he takes his oil fill cap off he sees it in the valve cover.
On the brighter side, our Mystichrome Termi ran 3/4 of a sec faster this past weekend than he did at Rockingham and one of our quicker NA cars that's been down for awhile is finally back up. If only we could have waited 2 more weeks! Lol. But anyhow, we're already working on the spring event now and may even add a dyno comp into the mix via Pro Dyno (the same dyno that's at MW every year).

Another update from this. Our Whipple S197 found out he has a crack in the #8 cly. So time for another block. The thing that sucks is that's a brand new set up.

I had to buy a new clutch, suspension and transmission after that race.
