my has been doing this thing for a few months now. the temp needle will not move for a few minutes, then it will shoot to 220, then fall down to about operating temp. i think its taking too much temp or pressure to open the thermostat. sound right?

this vid doesnt show the whole thing, but most of it.

are u sure your gauge is good. cause that sure does jump up and down quick. it seems like to me it would take longer to come down once it got that high. just my 2

Does this happen on just the initial warm up, or while driving also?

Sounds like your T Stat. Mine did that on the blue hatch I had, changed the T Stat and that fixed it

I'd put my money on the T-stat as well. Mine's now acting similarly though not as wildly, and thats what I'm planning...

X3 on the t-state

only time i have ever seen the temp climb like that was under a load with a blown headgasket. is this gauge electronic or mechanical? check connections, but either way throw a thermostat in it. but be weary of the gauge, ihave sen them burn out on more than one ocassion

Could deffinitely be a T-Stat issue. I would also lok into the gauge connections as it should not "Jump" that much. The increase of the engine temp will climb faster with a bad T-Stat. However, the gauge should show a smooth transition as it increases and decreases.

it is a mechanical gauges. could the copper line have a kink in it? that would cause the pressure to have to build high before it goes around the kink?

Very possible. Although that would have been a constant issue you have had.

If none of the above... often over looked a radiator flush or rodding. Just because its green does not mean the fins are not clogged up !

the copper line doesnt have fluid running through it at all. what happens is the coolant warms the temp probe that you installed in the intake and this heat travels the length of the copper to the gauge. make sure that the line isn laying on anything too hot.

my water pump gasket was leaking. so i just put a new ford water pump on. ended up buying a parts store thermostat because i forgot to order one with the pump.

but hey, an oem ford pump for cheaper than the parts stores... cant complain.

Andy, let me know if that fixes it. The 87 is doing the same thing.
