just wondering what everyone does to clean their engine? I bought some degreaser but it requires you hose down the engine when done. figured I would do that then use blower to dry it all off? obviously cover battery and air filter, but what else?

Eh I worked in a detailing shop for a month or so, we'd spray the entire engine with full strength greased lightning for half a minute or so and then hit it with a pressure washer for 30 seconds or a minute till all of the degreaser is off... just keep it up off the engine a foot or so or you'll risk blow vac/elec lines and connectors apart... and if any full strength degreaser hits your paint it'll fade it in fractions of a second.

Also we'd crank the cars up for the pressure washing and stay off the intake, alternator, battery terminals, can't think of anything else. Haven't found anything that beats greased lightning and a pressure washer :)

He did cars for Galeana and Bob Bennet.

IMO I'd stick with a pressure washer, no garden hose, borrow or go to a drive in joint, less water and more pressure for better control and cleaning.

And if nothing else, stay off the alternator.

I've always used a degreaser on mine but I also made sure to cover all electrical components that could potentiality cause a series problem. Cover those components with Shrink wrap if the engine is cold, and aluminum foil if the engine is hot. I also don't like or recommend using tire shine or armor all on anything. Sure it looks great, but after a while you'll be wiping up all that brown dirt off your bay and redoing the whole process. No lie, I've used WD40 on my plastics then wipe the residual off. You get a nice matte finish with a little shine and it's easy to clean off.

the best thing you can do cause im sure you got issued the 3 or 4 water proof bags at sif right? if so use them to cover your dizzy, and your alt, if your want to clean it with the car off. and im a simple green kinda guy, cost a whole dollar at the dollar store and spary the motor down and it cleans it very very well.

I've been detailing cars for a long time, and even do it on the side for extra cash in my home town. I don't cover any electrical components, including the battery. Guys the parts are under you hood, they get wet from rain, condensation from the heat of the engine on a cool day, and all sorts of other stuff. As long as you arent blasting the crap outta your electrical stuff you'll be fine, and as along as you're not spraying directly into the filter or intake you'll be fine there too. Purple power, greased lightning, simple green, or any degreaser will work fine. Note: If you have powdercoated items you may want to wet them first, or dilute the degreaser, they tend to streak pretty good under full strength degreaser. Then once dry, which a blower will work fine too, or drive it down the street and dry the body off and rims then by the time you get back to the engine it'll be dry and I use a light coat of the Aerosol Tire Dressing from Meguire's to coat the rubber and plastic parts for a nice semi gloss finish, and then of course mother's to polish any aluminum parts(no chrome) and wax any painted/powdercoated parts as well as chrome. Happy Washing:thumbsup1:

Soap and water and I don't cover a thing. Air compressor to blow as much water off as i can and always towel dry the inside of the dizzy cap just to make sure nothing got inside.

What's a "Dirty" Engine Bay????:lol1::lol1::lol1:
I use soap & Water.
I avoid getting water directly around the cap/rotor/distributor.
Everywhere else is fine.
Your belt will sqeak alttile for about 20-45 secounds.

I just use the Wal-Mat Super Tech Degreaser and I never cover anything. I just spray lightly on the electrical and avoid the air filter.
