If your not worried about the law, then 5% is the only way to go.:yes1:

And the tint law for sc is 27%

I had three layers of 5% on my LSC back in the early 90's. Daytime wasn't bad, but at night it was very hard to see out of.:yes1:

Yep, night time usually meant the windows were down.

Hi,
I am the new guy. Happy New Year people.
As for tint. I had mine tinted by a fella that was recommended and I never asked but it is so dark when I pass a police officer I just put the windows down.
If you want dark, I would go with 20% or so...that way if a cop passes you he can at least see you some what. I recently sold my Grand Cherokee that had 5% all the way around and 35% on the windshield (they cut around the inspection sticker). It looked great but I would always have to roll the windows down when a cop was around. One day I didn't notice the cop in time and got a $175.00 ticket.
With that being said, we got pulled in my wife's car a month ago with legal tint. The cop checked it..looked shocked it passed and let us go.

Croft...your shade is fine...did you do it y/self, or pay for an install? With straight, flat glass, it shoud be no problem imo...I don't think I'd pay to have s/one install the stuff. My son says that what these shops put on is better quality, but I recall having the best stuff put on (the car I noted that left me STRANDED mulitiple times in a previous post! ha), a car, but after "x" number of years it ALL goes bad. These shops that offer a "LIFETIME WARRANTY", ha...most of 'em are out of business in a few years, and if they're NOT, you've lost your receipt by then anyways to get any warranty honored if it starts to go bad! :)
But to answer your question Jeremy...if you go too dark and you run up on Barney Fife, you'll be sorry you paid to have the stuff installed. I've been ticketed by having the tinted licence plate cover...can't even iMAGine what would have happened if my windows were tinted too dark :)
If you keep your car parked outside & it's not garaged, the SC or Georgia sun will cook that stuff over time reGARDless of the quality :) Keep the car garaged, and/or keep the windows down from bein' exposed to the blistering sun & you'll be ok with a generic film I would think.

Hell yea i payed some one to do my tint. 3m is the brand name tint uses, and if u go to a big name place like Palmetto pro tint, mr tint, xtreme customs (places around lex/cola) then u wont hafta worry about them goin out of business. Just keep the receipt in the glove box and u will have it always. The only reason i didnt go darker is i drive a black car, and at some angles and light it looks like 5% u cant see in it at all. And i have black int. so that just adds to the fire. But i did it for the style, and to keep my int from fadding. My windsheild will be done soon, becasue of the glare from on coming cars hurts my eyes. and it will block some of the light off my dash. lol

They will bust your balls more for having the windshield tinted then 5% tint. Unless it's just the strip down to the AS1 mark.

u can go to the eye doc and get a "pass" or a waver thing saying you can have tint on the windshield. I will prob get like 30% on it, just for the glare.
But thats the only reason i havent done it already :yes1:

Different strokes for different folks, and different laws for different states too keep in mind. Just like helmet laws...while we don't have one in SC, you can't cross the state lilne without one without being in danger of getting ticketed :)
For South Carolina: With the exception of the front windshield, any window on a vehicle may be tinted with a combined film and window light transmission of no less than 27%. The film must also be non-reflective.
For North Carolina: With the exception of the front windshield, any window on a vehicle may be tinted with a combined film and window light transmission of no more than 35%. The light reflectance must be 20% or less.
Reflective tint isn't alowed in either state (probably all?), and no amber or yellow tint.
Getting a "pass" from a doctor is highly unlikely...if you didn't test with an eye exam that noted your eyes were sensitive to light, your doctor isn't going to write a bogus "pass" I wouldn't think. They're settin' t/selves up for fraud & the entire insurance industry is screwed up in part from fraudulent claims, etc...You really have to have a "medical condition" that would warrant that...not simply telling your doctor that your eyes are sensitive to light (which mine are) :)

If its your state at 27% ? < Thats a 1st for me in the Wild West its in increments of 5 ! I'd stick with the 30% and you will be fine... Because after that 1st ticket, you will be pretty pissed off on what you could have spent that $ on instead.

Yeah, I know...South Carolina isn't the only state that has "strange" & uncommon numbers associated with their tint laws: http://store.northerntint.com/unsttila.html

It's just a little harder then getting a doctor to sign the form.
Medical Exceptions - A person who suffers from a medical condition that causes the person to be photosensitive to visible light may obtain a medical exception permit. To obtain a permit, an applicant shall apply in writing to the Drivers Medical Evaluation Program and have his or her doctor complete the required medical evaluation form provided by DMV. The permit shall be valid for five years from the date of issue, unless the Drivers Medical Evaluation Program directs a shorter time. The renewal shall require a medical re-certification that the person continues to suffer from a medical condition requiring window tinting.
A person may receive no more than two medical exception permits that are valid at any one time. A permit issued under this subsection shall specify the vehicle to which it applies, the windows that may be tinted, and the permitted levels of tinting. The permit shall be carried in the vehicle to which it applies when the vehicle is driven on a highway. DMV shall give a person who received a medical exception permit a sticker to place on the lower left-hand corner of the rear window of the vehicle to which it applies. The sticker shall be designed to give prospective purchasers of the vehicle notice that the windows of the vehicle do not meet the requirements of G.S. 20-127 (b), and shall be placed between the window and the tinting when the tinting is installed. DMV shall adopt rules regarding the specifications of the medical exception sticker. Failure to display the sticker is an infraction punishable by a two hundred dollar ($200) fine.

I was just saying thats the only way you can tint your front windshield leagally. I just havent gotten around to goin to the doc and doin all of that stuff yet.

I wrote out a ticket on a vehicle illegally parked without a placard and here comes this 80+ year old veteran :patriot: ! The ticket was already written and asked him if he was handicap he said no just picking up meds. His wife says I've told him to get a placard because he is 60% V.A. and he just won't get one . I looked at him winked and said you earned it listen to your wife... and tore up the ticket !
