I have the opportunity to get some silver 16" ponies and was just wondering what would be the widest drag radial you would recommend fitting on one. Looking on the internet it seems to be a 255/50/16. Any pics would be appreciated, Thanks.:)

255/50/16's will be fine. Little fat on the 7" wheel but not a problem.
I ran the M/T drag radials in that size back when my 89 LX vert still had ponys.

Cool, would there be any benefit doing a 255/50/16 vs. a 275/40/17 DR? Maybe a little more sidewall? If nothing else I figure the ponies can't be as heavy as my chrome 17" cobra r's.

you can see a little bit of how that tire fits on a pony wheel with these pics I took yesterday. they have some bulge but they work. and it's worse on mine b/c i think they have around 12 psi in them.

I'd stick with the 255s. They fit good enough and will do work. And they are pretty close to 26" tall so your speedo shouldn't be thrown off. :thumbsup1:

Will the 255/50/16 have any benefit over my 275/40/17 I have now (for the drag strip)? I figured it up and think the 255 sould have a little more sidewall. Thanks fellas:thumbsup1:

I would think it'd be a very marginal difference. 255/50/16's will have more sidewall. But....with a 5spd with either tire...doesn't like to be shocked.(clutch dumps)
A 5spd car would do better with bias ply normal ET Streets with the soft sidewall.

Is this the tire you recommend? Thanks Billy

In a drag radial that'd be the one for the 16" Ponys. :thumbsup1:

when my dr's were new, I broke an axle with a 4k launch on stock suspension and stock motor (not making much power). after the blower and when the tires were almost done, though, i just blow them off trying to "launch". but they still hook good from a hit on the street.
smaller tire is less rolling resistance and less weight, too ;)

Yeah I am hoping that the ponies weigh less than the 17" chrome cobras I have now (cause they are ridiculously heavy). I have always heard that MT hook better than any other DR so I am looking forward to that:yes1:

yessir. they are pretty sticky for a drag radial. i weighed mine a while back but i can't remember what the weight was.

Just curious Crumbie, are you running a 5 speed?

yeah man. running an old busted 150 dollah t5! like was said earlier, it's harder to get a dr to hook like a bias ply slick b/c of the stiffer sidewall, but the mt's have such a sticky compound that you could still get them to hook with a hard launch if your suspension is right. that said - i have dead hooked them and broke. LOLs. that was on stock suspension but i wasn't making a lot of hp.

Yeah I think that I want to stay with the DR for now, try to keep the breaking down to a minimum. (I know it will still happen with the MT's though). And I have no trailer so I'll have to drive to the track for now.

+1, my Nittos now don't stand a chance on the street in 1st. Any other gear they do good, but I don't have a lot of power.

Any chance of telling us about your suspension set-up? what are you using for springs, control arms etc? I think i'm going to use the same tire but want to make sure my car has the right stance. I like the way your car is sitting low.....ready to pounce like a cat!!

I don't mind but it's nothing nice LOL. Springs are 4 cylinder springs in the front and eibach (one coil cut) drag springs in the rear. Shocks/struts are strange adjustables and UPR upper/lowers. My car sat about the same with the Ford C springs, but they were pretty stiff and I couldn't get it to hook as good with those. Now it rides like a caddilac LOL.
