View Full Version : Swapping to a carb. twin turbo pros-cons
I have a twin turbo mustang now, it is fuel injected and I am thinking bout swapping it over to a carb. and keeping the twin turbo. I am just wondering the pros and cons of changing it over. I am just getting tired of fuel injection cause it seems there is always a prob with it. I know I have to change alot of stuff to do it and I know a majority of it but not all of it.

Pros are "not so many problems". My car is not turboed but I know that ever since I pulled the EFI off and put a carb setup on,I have been pretty satisfied with it over all.

I can see no pro's...
I see no con's. I have been running a blow-thru carb set-up for 3 years. What sold me on the carb set-up is that its simple and it ALWAYS works.

Depends on what you are wanting to do with the car it really depend on what you want to go with. EFI is dependable, good on gas, easier to drive, and for me, eaiser to tune. Carbs are not my thing. Never really were, never will be. Can I work on one? Yes. Would I rather do EFI, sure.
Look at it this way. My EFI car, I can get in it, turn the key are drive. My Carb car, get in it, pump the pedal a couple times, turn it over, hopefully it starts, then get it to idle and warm up until the choke come off and then drive it.
There are con's to EFI. Cost of parts and if you are not in the know, tuning and troubleshooting. But the same cans come with blow thru carbs. They are not cheap and if you can't tune or troubleshoot a carb your in the same boat, but with less people around you "in the know"
I dont drive the car much at all maybe two-three times a month. I just dont know much bout efi. I am just trying to find out which would be alittle easier to work on when it does mess up like mine is now.

If I were you I would seriously either read/learn/study everything you can about EFI
---OR---
Find a good local shop that is familiar with turbo/EEC-VI cars to fix it.
I have no choice as I am broke so I have to learn and fix it myself, but if you don't have the mechanical ability or know how to work with EFI and you want a turbo car then be prepared to spend some $$$.

Lets try a different direction , what kind of problems are you having
Maybe we can help a little more on what's going to be the best thing for it.

Yea what he said. The thing about efi cars is that the Tune does not change, Its usually something mechanical. Im not trying to detour you from going carb the coupe is blow thru and I love it. All im saying is that some of your issues may just be other mechanical issues and not efi related.
I aint really having major prob. yet. The main thing it is doing is everytime I get into boost it starts to backfire or it might just cut out or like it did the other day and when I go to crank it it just decides to blow fire out and catch the grass on fire. I was just wondering bout the carb idea was for something that seemed alittle eaiser but may not be. I have studied on efi cars and come up with NOTHING so far. I just cant figure out why it runs like a bat out of he** one time and the next time I drive it it dont run half as good. Any ideas would help cause I got plenty of time to get whatever is wrong with it fixed cause my hood flew up on the car yesterday and busted my hood up pretty good and destroyed the wiper cowl area BAD and put a small dent in the roof so I aint planning on driving the car til it is fixed and hopefully painted. So time is on my side:lol1:

Start with the main checks on EFI. Fuel pressure under load and at idle, pull codes, check TPS voltage, IAT and ECT voltages, check the MAF, might not be big enough and it could be pegging.
How about post up your setup and what you know about it and we will go from there.

have you ever got the o2's in?
have you ever got the o2's in?
stuck some in didnt seem to help much. It just seems like it aint hitting on all cyl. all the time but sometimes it does so idk. I just want to make sure everything is right when I bring it back to ya so hopefully it will be as painless as possible. I could have a bad o2 wire or something or a bad o2 so I can try to check that stuff out first. I know it ran awsome when I got it back from ya at full throttle but then it started doing this stuff and I aint touched nothing on it that would effect the tune none. I just changed the plugs with the same type that I took out.

Do the plug wires have heat boots on them?
Do the plug wires have heat boots on them?
No they sure dont.

That would DEF. be a first to me. Replace the wires and add good long boots to keep the heat from them. Back pressure creates heat and heat kills plug wires.

all the problems he has described is what i am having. it seems to be electrical/computer related. mine will run rich as hell for about a minute then she kicks on. would this be a problem with the o2 snesors?

The car is in forced open loop...as in the o2s are off.....as in you were suppose to bring it back so that we could finish the tuning
