I am wanting to paint my car here in the next mth or so,so I have started tearing it down and getting it ready to start sanding and and fixing a few dents.I wanted to get some tips on sanding the car.I have access to a DA sander so I figured I would just pick up some paper from the auto paint and supply.
My question is though, what grit should I use?
On my front bumper it has some rock chips and such in the molding part of it,some are deep, how can I fix these? what can I buy to help with these?
I do plan on prepping and priming my car myself, not sure about doing a full paint job yet??
I am going to stay with the titanium color though,I have already pulled the quarter glasses, all the trim, hood, and bumpers off the car.
I am considering painting the whole car, molding and all.I like the way that Rons looks,so that is why I decided to go that route, how do I need to prep the side moldings to paint them as well, they are still on the car.
Thanks for all the help

get a long board and board the whole car so u can find all the low spots first then fix all the low spots then long board it again.. also u can use a block on the smaller areas..

So no DA sander at all,I should just pick up a long board and do it all that way?
What about filling in the chips on the black molding on the front bumper.

Also what grit paper should I go with?

I use 320 grit on a DA and do the whole car. and as for the chips, use some putty to fill them in.

i flat blocked my whole car three times to make sure i had all of the high and low spots level. make sure you use a trace coat so you can see where your low points are. just a cheap black primer or somehing will work. and as far as chips and gashes in the bumpers and moldings go just pick up some painters puddy and fill them in. and before you paint your bumpers be sure you use an adhesion promoter to make sure the paint sticks ($6 at advance auto)

I started out with 320 and wet sanded the car down,I took the dents down with 80 grit and filled those, what I could not get out with a hammer and dolly.I first sanded the roof and hood down with 180 and then went back with 320 and wet sanded. I still have a little bit to do on the bumper to fill some of the places in the molding part of it.
I ordered new weatherstripping and I got all the old seam sealer out and I am putting new seam seasler in. I also removed the doors so that I could jamb out the car and redo the doors.
After talking to a couple of guys,I am just going to spray some sealer on the car and then spray a base coat/clear coat. They said the car was pretty straight and I really did not need to prime the whole car, which is great with me.
I will have to repair my couple qtr glasses, but that will be another day.
Overall it was moving along pretty quick, then I got another job that requires me to work more,so I have had to put it off for a few weeks but I will probably get started back on it here shortly.
