Ok so the past couple days I have been driving and my tachometer will start out working fine and then all of a sudden it just stops [goes to 0 and doesn't move] and I also SEEM to have a slight loss of power.

So yeah, I have no idea other than maybe a loose connection but that doesn't explain the loss of power..
Ha I was thinking about just dealing with it but then I realized I'm part of a super smart forum:thumbsup1:

id start looking around the TFI module...(where the harness plugs into the distrubitor......The wires in that area, control the fuel pump, and tack, amongst other things

Is it all the same on the 4 cyl Chuck? He has a 4cyl.

Well, if he is feeling a loss of power and drives a 4 cyl.......he could just drop out the 4-banger and drop in a 5.0........power restored!.......
ok but seriously....when does it feel like it loses power? does it not want to accel and then pick right up?
any type of smoke from tail pipe (white/blue/black)? is it something that just comes and goes or does it
happen when your tach drops out?

Its a coil pack! My 4 banger did they same thing. The rear coil pack was split and arcing to the mounting bracket. If its a 91 up, which it has to be to have coil packs, replace both coil packs and the DIS module. It will have new found power and better fuel mileage. Is the CEL on??? If it is it should be a 1,2,3,4 coil failure code,I can't remember the code number, but that is the description.

oh..my mistake, like stated....it could be a coil pack depending on the year of the motor....

no smoke, and power loss comes when the tach stops working

ahhh thanks bud! well happy thanksgiving to me lol. is it bad if I drive it until I get it fixed?

So yeah, what's the price range around for the 2 coil packs and DIS thingamajig?

The front coil is the primary coil and the rear coil is the secondary(exhaust) coil. If the rear one went bad it runs slightly bad and the tach drops. I swapped mine and it wouldn't even run. So, remove the coils and look for cracks, if it needs 1 or 2 replace them. They are around $30 a peice. If that fixes it then drive. If they are not cracked, switch the coils front to rear, visa versa. If it gets worst, then the primary coil is bad NOW, the rear original coil and now the front coil is bad. If it doesn't change then is probally the Ignition module. The module is around $120. So do some checking, etc and let us know what you kind. I have a set of coils and a DIS in my tool box at work, but they are spares for my car.

It's more than likely your losing power then the tach... The coil pack is only in the years 91-93 if I'm correct ? Check all your connections to see if there is a miss before tearing it all apart.

Just making it clear that the tach completely stops working, not just drops rpms.
Is changing the module necessary though?
Thanks Silver, I'll get on that later today or tonigiht when I take my gf home.

Where can I find them for $30, I haven't seen any that cheap yet =[

The ingnition module runs the tach......It in turn reads the signal from the crank sensor(which could also be going out) and tells the coil when to fire, which is where the tach signal comes from.....it also is the signal for the fuel pump...

I got my coils for around $30, don't remember exact price. It could be one of the 3 items I stated above, 2 coils or the DIS module. If the module is loosing signal to the tach it will make that happen, if you ARE having a power loss, I'm betting on a coil. Mine dropped the tach in 1/2 but it might be the DIS module in your case, mine was just a coil. I installed a new DIS module but it was a no go, then I removed the coils, found the crack, and fixed it, thats why I sent you the route that would have fixed mine sooner.

Hopefully that will be my problem [cause it's cheaper lol]
but yeah, my tach has always been about 1/2 off since ive had it?
i haven't really thought about it cause it never really bothered me..

Well if its off by 1/2 and then down to 0 I just fixed another one today at the house, runs kinda bad, tach 1/2 off, then boom no tach. I threw my spare module on it and sent it down the road, of course he bought me a new module. I check both coils first and they were good, ie no cracks/burnt spots, slapped a module on it and wammo, no CEL and tach works good.

ugg well I haven't found anything that suggests that the coils are bad, I'ma go get a price at the parts store tomorrow for a module

They are around $130 but to me I can't stand my tach being off and my CEL being on. Well worth it, if you don't fix it, then broken stuff piles up and then cars turn into a rag.
