Well, I really want to paint my own car.... I'll be doing the body work and such. I'm familiar with those aspects of building a car. But I've never painted before. I've got some spare panels and would KILL to learn. Alas, with learning comes finding a teacher... Are any of you guys up for such an endeavor? I'll provide panels and cover cost of paint and such. Hell, depending on how in depth you're willing to go, I'm even willing to pay. It would just mean a ton to me to be completely self sufficient on building this ride. I won't be doing welding and fab work on the body... I just am not to that level as a welder.

just jump right on in and go to painting. it's fun once you start. it would take me about a day and a half to explain what is needed and how to use it. there is a lot to it so i will just give some advice on the gun. you don't need a $700 gun to start with. i have DeVilbis GTI 620, DeVilbis Plus that i use and prefer it over the Sata Jet. but that is me. anyway you would need a large compressor with any of those gun's.Any $50 gun can get you bye. Just don't be afraid to put some paint on. it's ok to get a run or two. you can sand and buff it and it can look as good as a high price gun did the job[ with someone knowing how to use it]. most beginner's make their first mistake of going too fast with the gun. that come's from being afraid of having a run. your speed will depend on the gun so just practice on a panel or go to a junkyard and get and old hood or a fender and practice with the hood standing straight up . there is a lot more to it than what i have just told you so dive on in and have some fun. good luck

painted by myself in an every day garage. hung plastic drop cloth from the ceiling, wet the floor, and shot with GOOD paint. the ebay paint is junk.

as for equipment, i use a big compressor, GOOD dryer/water separator on the tank, and the mini on the gun handle. the gun? $40 harbour freight hvlp. just be prepared to do some cursing, and buy extra paint. its expensive, but you will prolly need it on the first time. i need to fix my hood, because i spilled rubbing alcohol on it:angry: for those who noticed the discoloration at the beach. this is the second car i painted. im still learning myself. all together i probably have $500 in the paint job including the gun, paint, dryers, prep, and body work. will be cheaper now that i have everything.

use test panels... if you can find old hoods that have been thrown away at body shops... fenders.... what ever you can get your hands on to test out on... might sound dumb but " youtube" watch some video of people spraying to get down the hang of it.

just take your time.. an TEST TEST TEST :thumbsup1:

you'll be spraying glass in no time! :yes1:

I know I would love to learn how to paint as well.I bought a 60 gal 220v compressor not too long ago for my shop.I also went out and bought me a welder the other day b/cI want to learn how to weld so I can save some money on other projects down the road.
I know I did get a quote to paint my car the other day and the guy said $1800 to change the color and all.Not sure about it but we'll see.
Good luck with the paint thing though. One day I will quit being a b****h and give it a try.

if someone quoted you 1800 to change color's, i would ask to see some of his work, are the material's included, [i doubt it] and how long it will take, and most importantly, about your satisfaction. :thumbsup1:

honestly if he does good body and paint work and a good reputation for painting cars for other people then 1800 is cheap in my opinion

The compressor needs to do a minimum of 10 to 15cfm at 40 psi. Most are rated at 90 and you gain 10 to 20% more cfm going from 90 to 40. The smallest compressors I have seen that produce those sort of numbers are 3hp or more with larger tanks and run about 600 or up. Not saying it can't be done with less, but quality will suffer with inconsistant air flow. I'm kinda holding out until I can justify getting a standing 60gal that runs on 220 volts. That way there's no chance of poor atomization when I start spraying. As you probably can tell, I have done a cubic **** ton of studying lol.

He uses Dupont paint. Materials are included.I am going to go down to his shop in the next few weeks and check out some of his work though to see it up close.I have seen a few of his cars sitting out front at his place and they look pretty good.
The good thing is,he is just right down the street from me too.

I have painted a couple of vehicles over the years, although it was several years ago. We had good luck with a basic compressor and a cheap gun. Just had to wetsand and buff to get the orange peel out. LOL. I am looking into trying to use the roller and brush on my 85, believe it or not. I have spent some time looking at it and reading pages and pages about it, It's so cheap, it's tempting. It can be done for between 50 and 100 bucks, and lots of time. But if I can get a decent job that way, I'll put my money into speed parts.

This was the original post that I found talking about it. Be prepared if you start reading it - It has been a half million pages at least. Very interesting to me though, just due to the low mess, and very low cost.
