I moved here after shuffletown had already closed, and only know it had something to do with putting in a recreation park or something like that. (Yeah- they needed another park in the area, because the OTHER recreation park is a good 3/4 of a mile down the road- wtf?)
I was on a ride on sunday, stopped there and walked the track. Not much left but some of the strip, some fencing and the scoring tower.
Actually, seeing it all made me want to puke........
Can someone fill me in on why they closed? (and dont tell me about some do-gooders that moved in next to a dragstrip, then complained about the noise:bat: )

It use to be outside the city limits of Charlotte.
Once in was annexed in the local neighborhoods started fussing about noise. Even though they built the neighborhoods around the track AFTER the track had been there forever.
It went back and forth a while and it finally closed up. Crappy considering it should have been grandfathered in under the noise laws since it had already been there since the 60's at least.
It was the first place I ever drag raced when I was 16 with the same white 90 coupe I have now. Won my first trophy racing there that I still have in the garage :D

My bro-in-law used to live in Charlotte and he talked about running out at Shuffletown. Haven't heard that name in a long time.

Same thing happened out here with the nicer of our two local tracks, except they sold it to build housing and then the market crashed and now its just a big open field, makes me sad when I drive by, never got to race it but I've been told it was AMAZING compared to what we have now...
do gooders are fail.

same thing happened here..wayne county dragway (nahunta) used to be the place to go and it was 10 minutes from my house...a new owner bought the place in 2003 and from then it was just a cash cow to him...he stopped selling race gas, closed the snack bar and then wasnt buying VHT or prepping the track anymore but all along raising the prices,,before they closed it was 25 bux to run and 15 to watch...
sucks to see it closed now

kinda figured it had something to do with people building a house next to a dragstrip and whining about noise. Unbelieveable........
Same thing happened back home when a housing development went in in the 90s and complained about the noise from the race track thats been there since the early 50s. Luckily they got off with a 11pm curfew but are still racing today! +1 for the racers, :finger: the do-gooders!
Drag racing will NEVER cease to exist, and if these tracks keep getting shut down, it will be happening more and more on the streets. Do these idiots want their kids playing in the yard with that going on?

yeah, unless you got billions of dollars to fight the city(bruton smith blvd) you can't have a drag strip next to a bunch of houses.
