My car has doe this for a long time. When I first start the car in the morning, the engine hunts until it is warmed up. Do you think it is a ECT since it is in open loop until it reaches a certain temperature.

how cold are we talking about? mine usually hunts around for a while if it's good and cold. I think it's fairly normal.

It hunts anytime I start the car with the water at ambient temp. It goes the rpm jumps a few hundred rpm's. It does this until the temp gauge reads about 140 ish degrees. Once I drive the car for about 10 minutes it idles smooth. It doesn't matter if it is cold out or not.

Did you keep egr?

I had a 91 mass air 2.3 Ranger that did this. Once I thoroughly decarbonized the EGR system it solved the problem.

Sounds more like an EGR issue than an ECT issue. Have you checked for codes stored?

I would check for codes first and then do an idle reset. I have no egr on mine, it starts right up and idles around 1200 to 1300 when cold and back down to 1000 after its warmed up.

I do not have an EGR. It is blocked off. I started it today after work. The rpms went from 500 to 1300 500 to 1300 again, again, and again for about 40 seconds. Then, after about a minute it stayed at 1500 for a few seconds and worked it's way down slowly to 1000 after 5 minutes. By this time the water temp was about 130 degrees. I have no vacuum leaks.

You still want to check and see if there are any codes stored. Even if the light is off.

Unhook the IAC valve, and see if it does it again.

:yes1: Try cleaning the IAC with brake cleaner too.

My issue was partly solved when I increased fuel pressure from 39 to 42 psi. I only hunts now for a minute then it smooths out. I think when I upgrade the fuel system it should be set.
