Well guys i am getting ready to put the motor back together. I was wanting to know if i should change the cam while i have it apart. I do not want to upgrade to much to do this since i am building a 408 on the side. Just figured while i had it apart it would be easy to change. Keep in mind this will be a nitrous motor so anything to help that out. So what cam woudl you run if you run any. Thanks ~NICK~

Is it a stock 302, and what heads are you using?

Maybe a TrickFlow Stage 1. That is what is in Kelly's 90 stock short block, ported cast iron heads, and ported stock lower intake.

I still say stick with the stock cam, on a stock motor (no port work done, heads or intake). But if your 100% on putting in a cam, then I wouldn't go with anything bigger then what has been posted above.

I changed my mind i am just gonna build a 331 after finding out i would have to run a auto and change a ton of stuff if i went with the 408 i was wanting to build. So i will do nice heads and everything else on the 331. Thanks guys

you don't have to change to an auto.the only stuff to change would be headers, oil pan,and dist.

A Viper spec 6speed would certainly work, and there are also a few manufacturers that sell 5 speeds that can take the abuse as well. The bigger issues will be the use of an aftermarket block ( if you're planning to make big power ), as well as having a clutch that will stand that kind of power. Have you ever driven a stick in a car that has a clutch built to handle that kind of power ? They tend to be high effort and chatter quite a bit which takes a lot away from street friendliness. You might want to look into the costs of a good street twin setup if you plan to go over thet kind of power threshold...

that is what i am talking about. I do not want to lose the street ability. I want to make around 500 to 600 and be able to drive it where i want to. Yes my twin turbo 2000 had a spec puck clutch. It was a pain to drive but not that bad once you learn it.

500/600 will be right there at the threshold. I usually call it 600hp. You can likely get by with a nicer Ram/Mcleod/Centerforce DFX, and you can do the Viper spec 6 speed, or a TKO600, a Hanlon, G-Force, or Astro prepped T-5, and have fun ! :thumbsup1:
