My question although it may be a stupid one is what is the point in remote mounting a TFI?

Heat and vibration can kill the TFI, that is part of the reason it was moved on the 94-95 5.0 cars.

Yep, The tfi overheats and while you may be in the middle of your road trip your car stops running. There is no telling when it is about to go until it does.
