yea, another newbie here. would like to borrow some knowledge on my '86 gt vert. want to put a cam in--need that good sound--unsure of what degree i can go. it is all stock for now--except exhaust--previous owner spent good money on a bbk full exhaust. have a good set of headers--bbk-- to help out also. am curious about i was told i cannot install a cam unless i go to a mass sensor. any help would be greatly appreciated.

u can install a cam in a speed density car, you just cant go very big.the bigger problem is that the 86 pistons dont have valve notchs in them so piston to valve clearence is a issue.

i have run a fms e cam with a speed density, but i have never ran one with a 86 shortblock, maybe sombody else could chime in here and help ya out, or you can pull the heads and put the cam in and check your piston to valve clearence.

I can't help you with the SD issue. I recently put a trick flow stage 1 cam in my 86 motor with no PTV issues. I did however check it very carefully. My heads have 2.02 intake valves by the way.

o ok, i know when i ran those tristate heads with my stock short block i had to notch the pistons just to run a tfs 1 cam with 2.02 valves thats why i asked bc i hadnt messed with any of the 86 short blocks, but as we all know its is always worth the extra time to check pvc.

much appreciated!!!!! have my ace mechanic read these and go from there. if my clearance is okay, would a common e-cam---as i was suggested to before--work and sound okay? not going to be a street--or track-- racer, just a driver. don't want to take all the fun away from my rhd civic coupe!! haha

an e cam will probably give you some "lump" because it'll mess with the sd to much. you may get an e cam to work with those stock heads and pistons but its gonna be tight. the cam won't give you much power because the stock e6 heads suck. they will run outta steam at 4500. if you can, get your pistons notched or just swap in an 87 to 92 motoryou can notch them while they are still in the motor. have fun with that '86 motor. they can run pretty hard. I had my old '86 coupe running an 8.84 in the 1/8th with just a trick flow intake, bigger throttle body, big and little wheels and an off road h-pipe. that was with 180,000 miles.
